Joe Root has revealed that Moeen Ali chose to return to England rather than stay on for the final two Tests in India due to fatigue with life in the Covid bubble. Moeen was statistically the tourists' best performer in Chennai, taking 8-226 in the match with the ball and then hitting an 18-ball 43 as he top-scored in the second innings, although it was not enough to prevent England slumping to a 317-run defeat to leave the series tied at 1-1. England asked Moeen whether he would like to stay on for the double-header in Ahmedabad, but Moeen – who missed the Test series in Sri Lanka after being forced to self-isolate following a positive test for Covid-19 – has decided to fly home for a pre-agreed rest period. Moeen's departure will raise more questions about the wisdom of England's rest and rotate policy, which had already seen Jos Buttler sent home after the first Test, despite being one of the team's best players in that game. Root defended Moeen's decision, and cited safeguarding players' mental health as a key consideration on a subcontinental tour that lasts from Jan 2 to Mar 29. “Moeen has chosen to go home,” Root said. “It’s obviously been a very tricky tour for him.
